Rotrex Winches has supplied four bespoke split drum Thompson model 67 base mounted hand winches that are going to be used in a nuclear power station as the ultimate recovery system if all the power fails while in an extreme emergency situation.

The two left and two right handed winches will be used to pull the over head crane back into its safe maintenance bay so that a very large concrete door can shut behind it to enclose the waste inside the chamber to make the area completely safe. The chamber is fed with the drums of nuclear waste via a conveyor. The crane collects four at a time and stacks them up. The winches will be installed in their own designated area and the wire ropes that we also supplied will be fed through small holes in the wall to the far end of the crane’s runway. A slave rabbit at the end of the rope ensures that no matter where it is at the time of winding in, it will pull the crane to the safe bay.

The Thompson range of hand winches, trailer and base mounted winches are exclusive to Rotrex Winches. British designed and built in Britain, all Thompson winches are engineered for dependable use in many applications such as cable hauling, materials lifting and man riding. With ruggedly high duty cycles, Thompson winches will outlast many modern day products in testing conditions.
